With Halloween right around the corner, everyone is trying to find the perfect costume and plan the perfect party. While people are interested worldwide, the interest is concentrated in North America and Western Europe. In the US specifically, searches are heavy in the West and the Midwest.
The top three Halloween activities searched are pumpkin carving, haunted houses and trick-or-treating. Pumpkin carving is the most searched activity in the most states, with extreme popularity in the Western United States and the East Coast. Haunted houses are most popular in the South and Midwest and Trick-or-Treating is the top searched activity only in Ohio, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
While the most searched Halloween sweets included the standbys of candy apples, candy corn and chocolate, the most searched sweet overall is Halloween donuts and number three is Halloween pudding cups. For some reason, people seem to be expanding their sweet search for the holiday.
The most searched costumes are fairly typical with Batman, Pirate, Superhero and Star Wars all making the top 5. However, the most searched costume overall is Harley Quinn, which might come as a surprise to many. The number one trending costume nationwide is Donald Trump, reflecting his larger than life personality and the national attention captured by his presidential campaign. Trending searches also include couple costumes (Bonnie and Clyde), Dog Costumes (Ewok) and Star Wars Costumes (Princess Leia).
The search interest continues to build this week with last minute preparations for the big day, with the highest search volume coming between 5 and 8 PM, presumably when parents and young adults are off work.
